Dear cinephile, we have good news to share with you: Wes Anderson is back! Fresh off the oven (or the desert heat), the trailer for The Phoenician Scheme, his new movie, is out. With his staple sense of humour and love for all things absurd, symmetrical, and perfectly colour-graded, Anderson’s latest venture is an espionage film that will have you on the edge of your sit. Starring Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Benedict Cumerbatch, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Richard Aoyade, and Riz Ahmed, among others, the film is scheduled to hit American theatres on the 30th of May.
Wes Anderson has been able to carve a niche for himself that catapulted him to stardom. With iconic titles like The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), as well as commercials for Prada or H&M, and films for Netflix adapting Roald Dahl’s short stories, the prolific filmmaker is always working on something. His latest feature film, co-written with Roman Coppola (who’s worked with Anderson before in films like The Darjeeling Limited and Moonrise Kingdom), puts together some of his longtime collaborators.
It all starts when a rich European businessman’s plane crashes while he’s in there. People start looking for him, including his family (nine sons and one nun, his daughter). There’s also some impressive project under wraps, a lot of negotiation, treason, espionage, and robberies. Like an action film, but not quite. All you have to so is watch the trailer and wait for a bit less than two month till it’s out.
