Powerful and sensitive, straightforward but shy, genius and tormented; but on top of that, Alexander McQueen was unique. Truly unique. The British fashion designer has been inspiring people around the world since the ‘90s, and the fantastical universes he created season after season wrapped everyone in a kind of magic bubble. And because we can’t get over his tragic death and the even more tragic loss of his artistry and limitless talent, we must try to find ways of remembering him. Luckily for us, there’s a documentary coming in June. Directed by Ian Bonhôte, the film, titled McQueen, will offer a glimpse of his life, work, creative process and personality.
Lee Alexander took risks, had a particular sense of humour, and a lot to say. And society seemed to answer well, despite the controversies and scandals –especially, the ones of his early years. A powerhouse on his own, the exhibition Savage Beauty, organized by V&A Museum and that later on travelled the world, was one of the most successful exhibitions in history. But what is it about him and his work that keeps drawing our attention over and over again, even though he committed suicide eight years ago? As an artist, he was clear, fearless, and the most important thing: he reflected the times he lived in. With shows dedicated to fire, water, mental health institutions, rape, and the industry’s decay, his legacy is quite extraordinary and hard to classify. But for the moment, we’ll just go to the cinema and enjoy the new documentary.
