Somewhere between takeoff and landing on a flight to Calgary for a festival performance, Alex Gonzales began shaping the foundations of what would eventually become Fold. The first sketches, based on layered bass movement and minimal rhythmic ideas, later developed into the latest release from UNTER STRØM, the electronic project he shares with longtime collaborator John Kunkel. Released via Breathing Records, the track brings together industrial textures, techno references and a cinematic sense of space.
Formed by Gonzales and Kunkel, UNTER STRØM moves between industrial grit, techno and cinematic electronica. On Fold, that direction is handled with restraint. Instead of building around oversized drops or obvious moments of release, the track works through pulsing bass plucks, mechanical percussion and evolving textures, creating a hypnotic atmosphere that sits between the warehouse floor and the late-night journey home.
The collaboration between both creators also shapes the track's final character. After laying down the initial ideas during the flight, Gonzales passed the piece to Kunkel, whose work on atmosphere and melodic tension helped define its mood. The result gives each element room to breathe, with the track's slow-burning intensity taking the lead.
That exchange has become central to the UNTER STRØM project. Drawing from different musical backgrounds, Gonzales and Kunkel avoid tying the track to one specific electronic subgenre, focusing instead on a controlled, textured environment. Mixed by Aaron Short and mastered by Mike Marsh, Fold keeps its low end at the centre while leaving space for the details within its industrial textures.
