From November 7 to 9, Iceland Airwaves is celebrating a milestone: its 25th anniversary! Taking place across various venues in downtown Reykjavík, the music and arts festival aims to highlight both emerging and consolidated Icelandic acts including Sykur, Arnór Dan, Gabríel Ólafs, Inspector Spacetime, lúpína, virgin orchestra, and Teitur Magnússon, to international acts like Magdalena Bay (Rosalía’s latest Halloween costume, in case you missed it), The Vaccines, Villano Antillano, bar Italia, and Alice Longyu Gao, among others.
Iceland might be small, but the number of artistic exports it creates yearly is impressive. Of course, we’re all familiar with Björk, Ólafur Arnalds, and Sigur Rós, but the volcanic island has much more to offer. Inspired by their natural surroundings and extreme weather, Icelandic artists explore creation from a point of view that is quite unique to them — very reflective and introspective yet free and liberated. That’s why festivals lice Iceland Airwaves are important to the community.
Speaking of this milestone, Ísleifur Þórhallsson, Festival Manager for Iceland Airwaves says: “We are incredibly proud to be celebrating not only twenty-five years of Iceland Airwaves, but twenty-five years of playing a key part in the careers of some of the world’s most talented artists. Over the years, we have seen many of our Airwaves alumni grow from strength to strength, often developing into some of the industry’s most acclaimed artists. It is an honour to continue to bring new talent to Reykjavík and share our beloved Icelandic community with the world.”
