As part of the online exhibition Out and About: Queer Visibilities in the Collection, the Berlinische Galerie is presenting Queer Desire and Revolt, a series of short film screenings in collaboration with the Xposed Queer Film Festival Berlin. From November 22nd to 29th, you can watch the audio-visual pieces on their website and discover different personal experiences of what being queer means.
“Physicality is a key to liberation,” explains the museum’s organisation. “It is the starting point not only for a search of new forms of expression but also for breaking free.” With the aim to represent a broad spectrum, the six selected pieces are formally, geographically and thematically. For example, in Playback, by Agustina Comedi, we see the drag and trans community of the 1980s in Cordoba, Argentina; in Va-Bene, Ghanian performer Brenda Jorde makes a self-portrait. And in Galatée à l’Infini, the artists talk about the subjugation of the female body. Self-determination and appropriation are celebrated in Batería, by Damian Sainz, while Pirate Boys, by Pol Merchan, and Journey to the CharBagh, by Abdullah Qureshi, are poetic reflections on queerness.
