After two years of renovation, La Galerie Dior reopened more ‘grandieuse’ than ever last year at the emblematic 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris, the Maison’s epicentre of creativity that saw the birth of one of the most influential fashion houses in the world. Family and friends of Monsieur Dior, as well as highly-praised clients attended the intimate fashion shows from the late ‘40s onwards, delving into the couturier’s dream-like universe. This year, La Galerie Dior presents a renewed exhibition that traces the Maison’s history from the launch of Miss Dior’s revolutionary prêt-à-porter line in 1967 to today’s creations by Kim Jones for Dior Men.
Described as “a fabulous adventure at the heart of the Maison’s heritage,” the new cultural showcase at La Galerie Dior expands over 2,000 square metres and puts together various decades of dress-making. Through iconic garments and accessories as well as sketches and documents, the exhibition highlights the different approaches of the Creative Directors that have shaped the history of the Maison, from Christian Dior himself to Marc Bohan, to Kim Jones and Maria Grazia Chiuri. To organise it, the show is divided into thematic rooms like the one named Artistic Affinities, which celebrates the numerous collaborations between Kim Jones and visual artists like Raymond Pettibon (F/W 2019 collection) and Peter Doig (Winter 2021 collection).
One of the most important rooms is the one dedicated to Miss Dior, the ready-to-wear line that debuted in 1967 impulsed by Marc Bohan and inspired by Monsieur Dior’s sister. The so-called swinging ‘60s were some of the most innovative and creative times in fashion, and Dior embodied the zeitgeist through outfits imbued with the carefree spirit of the decade. Other rooms include Le Bal Dior, featuring some of the most elegant and exquisite gowns and pieces by the Maison; The Power of Gold, featuring glimmering clothes from nude and beige to golden and metallic; or the Enchanted Gardens, mixing delicate pieces with hand-made embroideries that showcase Dior’s historical savoir-faire.
