Caroline Polachek evokes a a new-found sense of resolution through her new single Sunset, a joint effort with music producer Sega Bodega. Through the image of sunlight, she fearlessly surrenders herself to a romance she had previously resisted. “So no regrets / 'Cause you're my sunset, fiery red / Forever fearless,” she sings, over a refreshing flamenco-inspired beat.
Her music video carries the same groovy, rebellious spirit – filmed in Barcelona, the video transports us into a post-internet Mediterranean summer, accompanied by handclaps and guitar tones. Bathing in sunlight, Polachek parades through the city wearing a 70s inspired outfit, complete with a crochet hat and an iconic eyeliner look. During her ethereal, vocalising outro, her dance moves are captured in an upside-down shot, pink Spanish sunset in the background.
Behind this dreamy, digital track and music video, the artist reveals her secret admiration for Ennio Morricone: “Ennio Morricone passed away a few months before Salvador (Sega Bodega) and I started Sunset, and the folkloric, epic tone of the spaghetti western sunset played on my mind. I wanted an operatic chorus with no lyrics, but salted with some very real disillusionment: past all the distraction, dead ends, and false promises of the world is the love we too often take for granted. That’s my sunset.”
Together with her critically-acclaimed single Bunny is a Rider, Sunset seems to have a more serene feel than the tracks in her 2019 album Pang – by all means, the playful and warm tones of Sunset make Polachek’s new single a certified pop banger, leaving us wonder what she has in store for the future of alternative music.
