If a Boiler Room event is coming near you, go! Because the fun is guaranteed. The renowned party is living a love affair with Mexico. Back in November of last year, as part of its World Tour series, it organised a four-day event that celebrated traditional sonidero culture while also bringing top-notch DJs including VTSS, Partiboi69, MCR-T, and Bambii. Flash-forward to this year, and Boiler Room organised another fun party in the city.
Heading to the venue, kept in secret until just a few hours before the event, you could easily recognise the people who were about to take the same path as you: the gays, girls, and dolls were dressed (or naked) to the nines, showcasing their incredible creativity when it comes to making an outfit. Chokers, wigs, outrageous makeup, angel wings, fishnets, piercings, platform boots… You get the picture. Once you got in, everyone was ready to have a good time surrounded by a creative, underground community free of judgement. Also, it’s good to note that the organisation limited the capacity of the venue, which made it more enjoyable as everyone could dance within their personal space.
The night kicked off with Kebra, one of the most influential DJs in the city. Her involvement in the cultural scene is helping it grow — and her friend/fans know it, so they were ready to start on a high from the very beginning. Her wide array of influences makes her approach to building highs and lows during a set incredibly rich, mixing hardcore with Latin anthems. She knows how to read and, more importantly, command a room — and that’s what she did.
After her, we saw the likes of Babybruise and Guapis, two other talented artists from Mexico City, as well as DJ g2g, hailing from Uruguay. They all brought the right energy and selection of songs, which ranged from deconstructed club to Latincore, to even Paulina Rubio. Fun, danceable, and high energy.
But the star of the night was, naturally, horsegiirL, who debuted in the country — which she’ll be visiting again in April for the Axe Ceremonia festival. The Berlin-based DJ is one of the fastest rising acts in today’s scene with a blend of humour, farm-obsessed puns, and hardcore tracks. She’s recently released her EP v.i.p – very important pony, whose songs she of course played — material hor$e, giirL math, take it offff, and eat, sleep, slay, repeat.
