Over the past few years, Sunnan have been shaping a sound somewhere between soul, psychedelia and cinematic rock. The Swedish collective first drew attention with releases such as My Love For You, Wild Horses and The Sound (Make It Come Back) with Titiyo, building a catalogue that gives atmosphere as much weight as melody. Their latest single, I Need You, turns inward.
The band’s earlier work already carried that mix of scale and feeling. Since Cinema and its companion EP, Cinema Sound System, Sunnan have kept moving toward a fuller sound while holding onto the warmth of their first releases.
I Need You works best when it lets that tension breathe. Built around hypnotic rhythms and layered instrumentation, the track grows in urgency without losing its reflective pull. At its centre is the task of looking at yourself honestly, what the band call "a good hard look in the mirror." The release arrives as Sunnan prepare for a busy summer of live dates. Beginning next week, the group will tour across Sweden, Norway, Finland and Romania, with stops including Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and Dalhalla.
With more dates ahead, I Need You still stands on its own. It shows a band settling further into its sound and leaving enough space for the listener to sit with the song after it ends.
