Ahead of the release of their album in a few days, Boxjar (you can pre-order here), unclassifiable artist Madge releases single Tall Grass in collaboration with Portugal. The Man. With heavy guitar riffs, this track has a very DIY spirit, just like the self-directed music video, which also features illustrations by artists including Fellatia G, Chad Kendall, and Libby Frame.
2023 has been an extremely busy year for Madge. Since their first release in January, titled mercury, the Mormon-raised, Brooklyn-based artist has released an EP (Ur Friends), and album (ravepack), and countless singles including Spiderweb, notss, Then Again, and Saraghina. A force to be reckoned, Madge can’t contain their creativity, which translates into a lot of DIY pop music that listeners are always eager to listen to.
In addition to working on their own project, Madge has previously written for other renowned artists like Brooke Candy, Pussy Riot, Slayyyter, and Yungblud, among others. Now, they’re collaborating with Portugal. The Man on Tall Grass, where they sing about the mess they got in: “We got buckets of rubble / Building nothing but struggle / Oh no / I think we’re in trouble.”
Speaking of how that collab came to be, Madge explains: “I met Portugal. The Man via friends and immediately began to bug them about a collab. We bounced ideas back and forth for months and collaged together the final product as a Frankenstein of all our virtual exchanges. We have the most insane text trail of messages, lyrics, voice notes, and pics. I feel proud that we made it happen.”
