You know that moment when you let your eyes slowly close before drifting off into a deep sleep? And there are those few fleeting seconds when your body dances between reality and some other dreamlike realm? That’s the feeling at the centre of Lutto Lento’s self-shot video, Flying High, the new single from the artist’s forthcoming 2569 EP.
In Flying High, Lento first welcomes us into a world not too dissimilar to Alice’s Wonderland. We see a paradise. A crooked, pink house, a hummingbird gently circling a feeder, and a garden of pink and white flowers — with contributing artist Taylor E. Burch (of the bands Tropic of Cancer and DVA Damas) in its centre. Like Alice, Burch seems to exist unaware of the outside world. A fantasy that quickly shatters when the camera pans to two business-looking men in suits, followed by the image of an unexpected F-35 fighter jet circling the sky, as Burch sings dreamily “You’re flying high, F-35”. Cobwebbed décor also flashes up in the video and the sight of a graveyard, planting this track somewhere between a lullaby and something more sinister.
The dream-pop ballad is the first of four songs from the Polish sound artist’s 2569 EP, released under Lento’s label DUNNO Recordings, previously described as dedicated to “strange, awkward and unrepresented dance music”. The EP is part of a trilogy of compositions. It’s nostalgic and intuitive, built upon guitar-driven songwriting and a selection of gentle synths and electronics, characteristics archetypal to the producer’s experimental style.
As the last release before his forthcoming full-length album, 2569 EP — which lands on 21st August — acts as Lento's temporary closing statement. As if to say a whispered “Goodbye”, before you wake up! Allow yourself to sink into his fantasy.
