As July comes to a close, it leaves behind one of those releases that quietly reminds us how blurred the boundaries between music and cinema have become, with Karin Ann unveiling Orion, an EP that arrives hand in hand with the upcoming psychological sci-fi thriller of the same name and marks the beginning of an entirely new chapter as she steps onto the big screen for her feature film acting debut.
The collaboration feels like a natural step for an artist whose music has always carried a cinematic quality. Every track is woven into the film’s narrative, following a story centred on a NASA interrogator trying to help an amnesiac astronaut reconstruct the memories surrounding a catastrophic mission. Questions of identity, memory and what makes us human have long been part of Karin Ann’s writing, making Orion feel like an extension of a world she has been building for years.
The emotional core of the EP arrives with lead single born to be, a delicate and beautifully restrained song that accompanies the film’s closing credits. It leaves listeners suspended somewhere between hope and uncertainty, carrying the emotional weight of everything that came before. Alongside the soundtrack, Orion also introduces Karin Ann as Morgan, her first role in a feature film. Sharing the screen with Andrew McCarthy, Debby Ryan and Drew Van Acker, she embraces a new creative discipline that feels surprisingly familiar. “I am very, very excited to be making my movie debut as well as soundtrack debut. As an artist, I put a piece of myself into everything I create. For the soundtrack, I was playing with different points of view: those of different characters from the movie and that of someone looking in from the outside.”
The experience has also reshaped the way she understands her own creative process. “Making an EP for a story unfolding on screen has been an amazing learning experience that taught me a lot about who I am as an artist and how intertwined acting and writing are for me.” The release follows a period of clear artistic evolution. Recent singles i was never yours and all my money embraced a more intimate, Americana-inspired sound while placing even greater emphasis on her songwriting. That direction also led to a landmark achievement, making Karin Ann the first Slovak-born artist to reach Billboard’s AAA Airplay chart, further confirming that her increasingly personal approach continues to resonate far beyond her home country.
Since the release of her debut album, through the telescope, Karin Ann has consistently explored identity, mental health and human connection with honesty. Those same themes continue to shape Orion, even as the project expands into cinema.
