A message is radiating out of Milan: go to the party, take the red pill. Evissimax drops a disruptive music video today for XXX that is raw, trap infused and cut with rave energy. This quick-fire conversation with METAL digs into the release.
What specific parties or raves inspired the scene from XXX?
There wasn’t a specific party or rave that inspired the sound and look of XXX, it was a mix of all of my favorite ones. I just wanted to recreate the kind of primal feral energy I’ve felt and look for when I personally go clubbing. For me a good club night starts with club friends (everyone needs a good group of club friends) the ones that will dance with you for a minimum of 5 hours and the party needs to leave you sweaty, makeup melted off, wearing the bare minimum of clothing and you need to go back home with sore legs and the constant thought of “wtf was that, that was amazing!” And that’s exactly what I want people to think when they listen to and watch XXX.
Is there a nod to Gaspard Noé’s Climax with the red light bird’s eye view dance shots? What were your other visual references?
Me and the directors of the video En.tv didn’t particularly talk about that, but it definitely is reminiscent of that, I would have to confirm with them (laughs)!
I personally don’t like to oversaturate myself or the people I’m working with, with references, if I decide to work with anyone creatively it’s because I’m genuinely a fan of their work and think they would be the perfect fit for a particular project, so I give as much creative freedom as I can as long as it resonates with my vision. I just wanted the video to kind of have the nostalgic feel of when I was a kid and I would go back home from school and would spend hours watching YouTube videos or MTV videos of all different genres and being so immersed in the artist’s world, to me there was a storytelling that maybe has been a bit lost nowaddays, and that’s what I wanted to get back to. This video is the introduction to Evissimax’s world, my Gotham city, X-city. The only specific artist I did mention, because they are one of my faves , are Prodigy, and there definitely is an homage, in my own Nigerian way ,to them in the video.

How does fashion figure in XXX?
Fashion is a further tool that defines the characters and the world of X-city, and the stylist I worked with for the video, Aurora Dolce, got that down to a T.
We wanted to go for a grungy, sexy, but still cool and a bit weird scary feel for me and everyone in the video. It’s a surreal world where it’s completely normal for me to chill in bed with prosthetic nipples that light up, and news anchors have eye patches and a blacked out front tooth.
