“Bitches gagging the way that I eat,” sings Sonyaé in Eat, the last song in Contactee. And not only bitches; we’re gagging too with Connor Treacy’s and RocMan’s (aka Tobias Rochman of Pelada) latest self-released EP, a short yet powerful record “crafted for next-gen club bangers” that highlights standout vocalists Maxine AshleyHawa, and the aforementioned Sonyaé
For those of you who might not be familiar with Connor Treacy, he’s an A&R powerhouse and nightlife figure — Paper magazine named him “LA’s nightlife visionary” thanks to his famous club, OffSet, of which they wrote that “is redefining the nightlife experience, crafting luxurious and exclusive events.” Last year, he released an EP titled Moments Between Thoughts together with kire, a testament to his good taste as a producer and collaborator. On another hand, RocMan, the other half of the Contactee EP, is the moniker of Tobias Rochman, of Pelada, a project which, after ten years touring around the world and releasing two LPs, came to an end for its participants to explore new creative endeavours.
Now, they’ve teamed up to release a three-song record on their own. As producers, they’re behind the multi-layered tracks, which bridge genres like house, melodic, and pop. However, they wanted these strong bases to also have vocals, so they asked three different vocalists to take part in the project. The EP opens with Give it Away, with Maxine Ashley, fresh from collabs with Black Coffee (one of which, You Need Me, earned her a Grammy Award) and Pharrell. It’s dreamy, danceable, and a perfect track to enjoy this summer. We then move on to Believe in Love, with Hawa, whose sound takes us back to the best of 2000s Eurodance music, fusing nostalgia with more contemporary sounds. And then, Eat is a powerful, bold statement that sees Sonyaé reclaim her power.
