To end the year with a bang, Cheiq released in December of 2023 her single Hot Bitch, a camp anthem about… yeah, being a hot bitch. With lyrics stating “I’m hot / I’m rich / I’m that song / That you never skip,” the contagious song and energy gained immediate traction. Today, the Los Angeles-based artist ruveals (pun intended) a remix of that song together with drag artist Lala Ri, known for participating in a couple of different seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
“Hot Bitch Remix is about manifesting the career I see for myself and tuning out the outside voices and opinions and reminding myself that the only opinion that matters is mine,” Cheiq says about the newly released version of her song. “There will always be haters in the world but the only thing that matters is that you love yourself. t’s about taking the haters and making them into my staircase and walking straight up. Your mindset is absolutely everything when it comes to living a healthy and successful life,” she continues. Indeed, haters gonna hate, so it’s up to you to listen to the right voices that help you forge the path you envision for yourself.
And with a such a statement song that feels very much her own, why did she involve Lala Ri in the remix? In Cheiq’s words, it was because the drag star is “the epitome of Black excellence and self love,” while also stating that “Lala is a hot bitch and someone that I know is a representation of this song.” Because bitches that are hot together, slay together.
In the music video, she wanted to reclaim historical female figures, both real and fictional, to talk about power, patriarchy, and justice. More especially, she’s focused on beheaded personalities like Marie Antoinette, the last French queen, and Medusa, the mythical creature who was once a beautiful woman raped by Poseidon and then punished by Athena, who turned her into a gorgon.
