Mi Man and Jean Tonique, long time friends and dance music collaborators, mark a new chapter in their relationship, formalising their collaboration as production duo, Tonique & Man. The duo welcome into the world their first single, the irreverent and funky Running After Time. The accompanying video for the track, a colorful and silly homage to the duo's favoured food: pizza. The scene is set, dough is twirled down escalators and 45s are wood fired as the track unwinds and Tonique & Man win over the masses with their sugary melodies.
Both Man and Tonique have toured and worked as multi-instrumentalists, DJs, and composers, a level of experience that proves evident in their sound. Focusing on the fusion of funk and disco, and pairing it with comedic lyrics about waking up too late, feeling good, and losing oneself, the track makes up for its lazy lyrics with an easy and varied groove. For a song about a chronically tardy guy it's pretty compelling, leveraging plenty of inventive hooks and breakdowns to piece together a sweet little slacker-pop manifesto.
With debut album Opening Soon to follow, the French buddies have lots of musical room to roam, the question being whether they will bother? Their press release itself bogged down with pizza references, it’s evident that Tonique & Man are unphased by professionalism, preferring an aloof and fun approach, heady pop escapism.
