Fashion, in its purest form, is an intersection between memory, identity, and material. In this space of constant transformation, Tíscar Espadas has constructed a unique voice defined by a language that oscillates between experimental tailoring and artisanal heritage. Her work, indifferent to fleeting trends, is grounded in the pursuit of a balance between structure and fluidity, between the ancient and the speculative. With this premise, the Spanish designer arrives in South Korea with an exhibition titled Romeraje at 37A, Seoul, until the 6th of April, marking a milestone in her international expansion and the cultural dialogue between two radically different textile traditions.
The core of the exhibition is Chapter VI, a collection where Espadas distils her most radical vision of clothing as a narrative structure. The pieces on display challenge conventional categories: jackets that mutate with the body, folds that reveal hidden stories, textiles that seem to have been shaped by time. Alongside them, a selection of sketches and garments from previous archives unveils her creative process, a visual map that allows one to understand her textile language without intermediaries.
Beyond fashion, the exhibition is enriched by the collaboration with Korean ceramist Cherrien. Her pieces, arranged in dialogue with the garments, reinforce the idea of materiality as a container of stories. Both ceramics and fabric share the same fate: they are both born from human gesture, pressure, moulding, and error. In this intersection of disciplines, Espadas and Cherrien construct a space where the ephemeral and the eternal coexist in perfect tension.
From her beginnings in London in 2019 to her current base in Madrid, Tíscar Espadas has woven a unique path in the industry, distancing herself from the cycles of accelerated consumption and betting on small-scale production, where each garment is conceived as a numbered object. Her recent recognition with the Vogue Fashion Fund 2024 only solidifies her position as one of the sharpest voices in contemporary fashion, capable of engaging with tradition without falling into nostalgia.
The choice of 37A as the venue for the exhibition is no accident. This space, a traditional tiled house nestled in Yongsan, has become a hub for artistic explorations that revalue the relationship between the material and the immaterial. Romeraje fits into this dynamic and proposes a series of activations, including encounters with the designer, performances, and a programme that extends the exhibition experience beyond the textile object. In this context, fashion ceases to be a mere industry and reveals itself as a field of resistance, where time, memory, and the body converge in the same fabric.
The exhibition Romeraje by Tíscar Espadas is on view until the 6th of April at 37A, 56, Hangang-daero 14ga-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Korea.
