Even though your Instagram feed is probably back to ‘normal’, Black Lives Matter every day. Yes, it’s physically and mentally exhausting to endure that much pain and trauma; but if you’re already tired of the anti-racist fight, imagine being non-caucasian and living it on a daily basis. That’s why fundraising initiatives are still popping up here and there. The latest to catch our attention is The Time is Now, a collaborative project by online gallery Galerie Number 8 and Paper Journal, selling posters and one-off objects and editions until August 10th.
Founded by Marie Gomis-Trezise, Galerie Number 8 aims to represent and showcase the work of Black photographers and artists celebrating Black identity. Pairing up with photography magazine Paper Journal, the two aim “to give back by donating to charities globally that will help uplift and support their communities locally in the ongoing fight against systemic and ingrained racism.” To do so, they’re selling limited-edition posters, and they’ve also included a raffle where they auction one-off prints, photobooks and t-shirts, whose 100% of proceeds (after printing and shipping) will be split equally amongst charities Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust (UK), Pay the Rent (Australia), La Vérité pour Adama (France), and the Marsha P. Johnson Institute (USA).
As the initiative text reads, “Galerie Number 8 and Paper Journal stand in support and solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement today and into the future, with communities that have been vilified and oppressed institutionally by the status quo.” Artists participating in The Time is Now initiative include, among many others, Bettina Pittaluga, Campbell Addy, Ib Kamara, Mous Lamrabat, Olga de la Iglesia, David Uzochukwu, Akasha Rabut, Kyle Weeks, Katrin Koenning, Mar+Vin, Nhu Xuan Hua, Sarah Blais, Djeneba Aduayom, Lua Ribiera or Honey Long & Prue Stent.
