After their much acclaimed 2024 album, Submarine, The Marías are back with new music. Even if they’re still touring the world, the indie LA band found some time in their schedule to work on new songs — and today, they release two: Back to Me and Nobody New. Furthermore, the former comes with a beautifully minimalistic and visually poetic music video directed by C Prinz. Take a look!
Despite being fresh new for us, the band had these two tracks made a bit over two years ago. “we wrote nobody new a couple years ago after we finished submarine. consider it one of the submarine b-sides, still a part of that world,” they explain on a recent Instagram post. “back to me was written a couple of months later while we were jamming in the studio as a band. the guys were experimenting with some new synth sounds and chords. i immediately went into the vocal booth, and the melody and lyrics came out faster than any other song, almost as if the song wrote itself. after finishing it, it felt like the beginning of a new era beyond submarine. consider it an introduction to a new world,” comments Maria Zardoya, the frontwoman of the band.
In this song, María opens up about jealousy, working on herself, and try to figure out how to move over. “ Promise I’m changing / Back from the dark / But if I would see you / I’d fall apart,” she sings at the beginning of Back to Me. The chorus reinforces this sense of envy, curiosity, and even regret: “Is she all that you want? / Is she all that you need? / I’d be there in a hurry / Baby come back to me.”
