In all of us, different personalities, concerns, and ways of understanding the world coexist. The different aspects of our identity complement each other, colliding with each other at certain times, making us who we are and giving us a personal essence that sets us apart from the rest. This natural dissonance, contradiction, and opposition is the starting point of Thandii's latest release. Through two companion albums, Dream With You and Come As You, both out now under their own label, HaloHalo, they now celebrate the duality that lives within us, paying homage to the complexity of the human being.
Having left London nearly a decade ago to create a space for prolific expression, the musical duo continues to experiment with sound as they delve into the complexities of human identity and make duality, which is at the heart of their DNA and the pillar on which to build their latest project. With the duo co-writing, co-recording, and co-producing from their seaside studio, HaloHalo, in Margate, Kent, their two new albums complement each other through their differences, offering two equally mesmerising soundscapes that show us a little more about their creative universe that they refer to as “a genre collage.”
While Dream With You is built on cassette-tape-driven Lofi beats, art-pop melodies, and soulful piano breaks, Come As You explores more experimental song forms that wouldn’t seem out of place on a Broadcast or Stereolab album. The albums strike a unique balance where Jessica’s voice transcends the realms of the two statements, dancing between falsetto harmonies and confessional spoken word. “It sounds like it wouldn't work... but trust us, it does,” they add. Both albums are not only available via HaloHalo but also as a limited edition vinyl from Rough Trade. The duo also have a show at Colours in London on September 12th; you can get your tickets here.
