Russian performance artist Sasha Frolova is often compared with Lady Gaga and Marina Abramovic. She wears latex costumes, dances like an anime hero, sings psyhedelic songs about Love and creates huge inflantable sculpures. Her creation is a synthesis of contemporary art-performance, sculpture and electronic music in the same time.
“My character is a mixture of retro-animation of 30s, pin-up style of 50s, futuristic movies and comics of 60s, Japanese anime and computer games of 80. I'm looking for new significant images and try to create a collective neo-symbols of pop culture, absorbing as much as possible from visual traditions that were existed before me”, says Sasha. In fact, we've known for over a year and spent last summer together, we were dressed up for special exhibitions and parties in Moscow. I guess I know a little bit more about Sasha than I should. For example, Sasha loves coffee from McDonald's and always adds a double portion of the marshmallow to it. Sasha is constantly late to meetings and then apologizing for a long time (and buys me a second cup of coffee!). During its regular meeting, I decided to ask Sasha about everything she loves.
About work with latex.
Sasha: It's very unique material! Latex is glued by hands, this is a laborious process. One costume takes about a week and to create a sculpture it takes about a month.
About the first inflatable sculpture.
Sasha: In 2008 I did my first inflatable sculpture made of latex – Lyubolet/Lovecraft. This is Spacecraft – a boat and two spacesuits. It is a visual experiment about the methods of practical use of energy of Love. A sculpture-mechanism for intergalactic and interspatial travels to the space and beyond its limits. Lovers sit inside the ship, join their hands. The spaceship rises to the air and travels in the space due to the feeling of love of two astronauts.
About dreams.
Sasha: I have always dreamed to be an artist even as a child. But then at first I planned to be an architect then I have studied the medicine during 4 years and even planed to become acupuncture and reflexology specialist. And just after that I decide to be an artist for sure.
About the performances.
Sasha: I was wearing a costume covered by 100 chicken eggs – and I was falling down on the floor in it. I was throwing cakes, pasta in Gagarin's mouth, was painting with flower petals, covered myself with ice-cream, perplexed myself in 9 thick seven meters long plaits… Many many weird things!
About Aguaaerobika.
Sasha: My friends and I, we organized a series of parties called Aquaaerobika, the dress code for which were swim suits – it was a mix of 80’s trend and aerobics with some kind of parody on pool-party. We usually made these parties as after-parties of fashion shows of our friends. And it was a vivid wild cocktail of wet naked bodies, glitter, champagne, makeup, eyelashes longer then heels, lots of light and music, it has always been a great fun!
About the songs.
Sasha: I sing about Love – in its various manifestations. Love for me is an information channel, channel of my creativity – and I would like to attune people with Love that goes through me.
