We're about to say goodbye to the summer and welcome September, which marks the return to routine and the beginning of a new cycle for many, but Pearl & The Oysters is here to bring us good vibes with their new track and video, Cruise Control. This is the third offering from their new album Planet Pearl, the duo's second record for Stones Throw and the culmination of nearly two decades of connection and collaboration which is written from the perspective of castaway space explorers marooned on Earth and will be released in September 20.
“Cruise Control is pretty cynical because it equates the feeling of freedom and excitement one can experience zipping through the highway with a form of voluntary ignorance, which we ultimately don't wish upon anyone,” says Joachim Polack, better known as Jojo, about their new single. Since he met the other half of this musical project, Juliette Pearl Davis (Juju), on their first day of high school in Paris, they have been working together while documenting their lives in Florida and LA on their earlier albums. Now they delve into themes including mental health and the feeling of being “literal outsiders everywhere we go” on Planet Pearl.
Channelling their feelings into jazz-pop joy, Jojo shares an interesting conclusion when asked about his new track and video. “It sometimes feels like the only way to stay sane in a world that clearly isn't, is to go through the motions in a highly desensitized 'automatic pilot' mode.” Pearl & The Oysters are on tour throughout the rest of the year, with headline shows and openers for Ginger Root.
