“My name’s Parthenope. I’m never ashamed.” With this strong statement we’re introduced to the main character of Paolo Sorrentino’s new movie starring Celeste Dalla Porta, Stefania Sandrelli, Gary Oldman, Silvio Orlando, and more. For over two hours, we’ll follow the life of an Italian girl — her romantic adventures, her breakups, her dreams and hopes, and also her concerns. Hitting theatres in the coming months, A24 just released the first official trailer. Take a look!
Paolo Sorrentino is one of the most celebrated and beloved Italian filmmakers today. In 2013, his wildly acclaimed La grande bellezza put his name on everyone’s lips after winning several awards — including the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. Following that success, we got other brilliant works like La giovinezza (2015), Netflix’s È stata la mano di Dio (2021), or the series The Young Pope and The New Pope, starring Jude Law. And now, he’s back with another movie set in his beloved Napoli, where we delve into Parthenope’s life.
The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Best Movie as well as the Jury Prize at San Sebastián film festival, and the critics agree in saying that it’s his most overwhelming love letter to his hometown, Napoli, to date — although some comment that it’s a bit too much. In Spain, it hits theatres December 25 via Bteam Pictures, and in the US, audience will have to wait until February of 2025. So in the meantime, enjoy the trailer!
