After presenting two posthumous collections at Louis Vuitton, it was about time for us to get to see Virgil Abloh's last collection for his own fashion brand. Off-White was the project that launched his fashion career, as he was already known as a multi-hyphenate artist, that would eventually get him a seat at the table in Paris, at one of the biggest fashion houses in the world. Their latest Fall/Winter collection titled Spaceship Earth is Abloh's own personal farewell to the brand that watched him grow and evolve into the streetwear giant we all cherished.
The show starts off with soundbites from one of Pharrell Williams's interviews – a known collaborator of his – talking about codes and code sharing, which was what Abloh was known for, creating his own language and sharing it with the world. Whether it be to amplify voices from the Black community or simply by creating lingo that would become viral in the streetwear world, through his now-iconic quotes – seen for example in Kendall Jenner's own “little black dress.” Or even by reinventing established codes, like elevating hoodies and cargo gear.
He shared new and older codes down the runway, he even sent a model with white flags that read: “Question Everything.” And that's what he always did, from actually including question marks to different phrases in his clothing, to now stepping into new realms by exploring a new haute couture line. Virgil Abloh had so many ideas, he stopped by different planets before landing back on Earth.
Abloh also showcased a never worn Met Gala 2020 dress that was meant for Jenner and even alluded to his personal health issues through two handbags: one read “More Life” and the other one full of red and white pills, carried by Cindy Crawford. Other friends and fashion giants like Naomi Campbell, Bella Hadid or Honey Dijon also walked the runway to bid farewell to the designer. To create even more buzz, the show was streamed at one hundred storefronts around Paris from boutiques, pharmacies, barbershops etc. A great way to send off this bold and unprecedented collection.
