Having released her debut EP, Trashstarwrld, last year, Laurel Smith now presents her new single and music video, snow queen. The North-London alt-provocateur delves into the depths of human emotions, the existential emptiness, and the processes of personal development through a tale of a girl who, despite material abundance, yearns for fulfillment, ultimately realizing it's an internal, not external, pursuit. With this new release, which offers shadowy electronic production from Jay Flew, the artist, with more new music to follow over the coming months, continues to establish herself on the music scene.
"When Jay Flew and I made snow queen, I felt like I was stepping into a character. The whole song paints a picture for the listener; the icy pads and mellowed-out Koto plucks set the scene of a girl who lives at the top of a snowy mountain, surrounded by riches but never content,” says Smith when asked about her new track, which comes along with a music video with visuals by Studio Sparks. Making metaphor one of her best allies and narrating the process that the story's protagonist experiences when she realizes that material things do not make up for her emotional deficiencies, Lauren invites us to accompany her on an exciting journey.
“She was granted a wish to get everything she ever wanted by a higher power, who now laughs at her naivety from above,” she adds about the introspective journey that snow queen takes us on, a song with which the English singer continues to grapple with identity, explorations of female empowerment, and examinations of human relationships. This glacial collision of alternative pop and hip-hop provides clues about the sound that the artist will be developing in her next releases, adding a huge dose of personality and identity.
