Having spent their entire careers photographing the lives and stories of others, it’s time to put their own lives through the lens. In collaboration with Fujifilm, sixteen Magnum photographers from across the globe tackle ‘home’ as the subject of this exhibition – titled Home, naturally – coming to London’s Vinyl Factory in Soho from 18 to 27 May. Each photographer tells an introspective short story about their homes, be it past or present, from old lives to new life.
“Home is where the heart is” states Pauline Vermare, Curator of Magnum Photos; “Home is where we were made. To some, it doesn’t exist in the physical world any longer: it is a memory. Home is within oneself,” she continues. The simplicity and openness of the title and brief Home may seem straightforward, but the complexities of life make it a hard nut to crack. However, the title of this project was not chosen because of its complexities, but because of its universality; allowing sixteen different photographers to decipher it’s meaning themselves.
Magnum photographers spend much of their time travelling and documenting far away lands. Often they find themselves away from home drifting between continents, war zones and cultures. But home is where the heart is, and these works are a tribute to their roots. Exhibiting across ten global cities, this group of work arrives in London after showcasing in New York in March. The exhibition features work from the likes of Mark Power, Hiroji Kubota, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Chien-Chi Chang, Antoine d’Agata, and Alec Soth. Alongside the expanse of work will be lectures, tours and an accompanying photo book.
The work on display is diverse yet familiar. Some photographers stayed within the boundaries of their immediate homes whilst others travelled the world to discover who they are. The photos vary in approach from aerial views of Japan, to university halls or the birth of a child. The work is personal and spans across both miles and milestones. If you’re in London, head over to Soho for a thought-provoking, moving exhibition: you won’t be disappointed. But if you can’t make it, know this: after London, Home will travel to Paris, Tokyo, Köln, and other cities to be revealed.
