The German fashion photographer and film director Peter Lindbergh is one of the most influential figures in the industry, having shaped an impressive legacy in which his black and white world reflects some of the most relevant moments in fashion, with women at the centre of it all. Now La Galerie Dior in Paris is paying a tribute to his greatness with a remarkable exhibition featuring over a hundred of his photographs of Dior designs, spanning from 1988 to 2018. Curated with support from the Peter Lindbergh Foundation, this showcase not only honours Lindbergh’s skill in capturing the essence of his objectives but also emphasises his artistic connection to Dior’s legacy.
The exhibition unfolds across ten engaging spaces, taking visitors on a journey through Lindbergh’s celebrated work, including iconic images created for Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar and a retrospective of his rich and versatile career, marked by his instantly recognisable naturalistic touch, unveiling beauty without artifice.
Alongside these renowned shots, the standout feature of this exhibition is some of Lindbergh’s unseen material, like contact sheets and reading prints that offer an exclusive glimpse into his creative process or an extraordinary series from a shoot conducted in the streets of New York in October 2018, designed exclusively for Dior and displayed publicly for the first time ever.
This retrospective celebrates not only Lindbergh’s photographic legacy but also his shared vision with Dior of beauty as strength and individuality, accompanying the graphic work with more than eighty archival pieces of the house brought from around the world, creating a conversation between images and garments. The photographer once said, “My great subject was women. To follow them as closely as possible so that they could express themselves and assert their truth.”
With his camera, Lindbergh captured women’s elegance and allure in an honest way, aligning with Dior’s dedication to artistic expression and the exaltation of the world through female eyes.
The Dior/Lindbergh exhibition is now open at La Galerie Dior, 11 rue François-Ier, Paris 8th, and you'll be able to visit it until May 4th, 2025.
