Picture this: Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi, Luca Guadagnino, and Daft Punk—need we say more? When it comes to putting powerhouses together, Chanel doesn’t play games. For the new Chanel Nº5 campaign, one of the most (if not THE most) legendary perfumes in the world, the Maison taps the famed Italian filmmaker (Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, Challengers, Queer) to lens a history of two lovers who almost meet, begging the eternal question of ‘what if’ and letting the audience ruminate about serendipity and fortune (or misfortune).
Titled See You at 5, the two-minute long campaign is a short film with a sense of humour, unfinished business, freedom, and desire. Chanel ambassador Margot Robbie, worldwide known for her roles as an actress in films like The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), I, Tonya (2017) and Barbie (2023), as well as a producer who’s built her own path to artistic and commercial success, is now also the new face of Chanel Nº5, one of the most famous fragrances of the Maison. In this short film, she wears a vibrant red two-piece suit (a nod to Ridley Scott’s 1986 ad campaign starring Carole Bouquet) and drives a convertible car to meet a mysterious man she fancies. She’s in control of her desire, her freedom, and herself, so she heads to his house.
Jacob Elordi, the other co-star of the Luca Guadagnino-directed ad, does exactly the same: strongly attracted by Margot’s magnetism and radiant smile, he hops on his motorbike and rides down the road to Big Sur, California with Daft Punk’s Veridis Quo playing on the background. As both get closer to each other, we see that they cross paths… while driving on opposite directions and in different roads. A story that could’ve been but isn’t, an encounter unfulfilled, a desire still unsatisfied. But that’s what keeps it alive and well. Visibly laughing at her fate, Margot dives into the ocean, a metaphor of Chanel Nº5, where she’s free to be herself.
