In 1913, Deauville, a lavish seaside resort in southern France, epitomised glamour and high society. At just 29 years old, Gabrielle Coco Chanel entered this world of fashion and opulence. Fast forward to Virginie Viard's Chanel Fall-Winter 2024/25 showcase, where Deauville emerges as a muse, its seaside allure sweeping into each design. Inspired by Coco Chanel's connection to the town, the collection unfolds as a love letter to its romantic sights.
Inspired by Gabrielle Chanel's profound connection to the seaside town, each piece is infused with its essence. Imagine the view from the finest suite at the Hotel Normandy Deauville—the sun-drenched landscape, the whispers of the ocean breeze. This idyllic scene translates beautifully into flowing silhouettes—a kaleidoscope of vibrant pastels and shimmering gold lamé, mirroring the ever-changing hues of Deauville's sky.
Amid the vibrant energy from the bustling crowd outside and the cinematic atmosphere infusing the venue, the show starts with a mesmerising film featuring the renowned pairing of Penélope Cruz and Brad Pitt. This cinematic tribute pays homage to the timeless classic A Man and a Woman by Claude Lelouch, setting the stage for a narrative teeming with love and yearning.
Viard's masterful interpretation channels the cinematic allure of Deauville into a captivating storyline, which has been a pivotal element for the house across multiple seasons. Chunky sailor sweaters and belted coats echo nostalgia, seamlessly blending with the sophistication of the creative director. The colour palette dances with the vivacity of Deauville's spirit, ranging from playful pinks to tranquil blues and sun-kissed oranges.
Drawing inspiration from navy aesthetics, tweed peacoats and sailor foldover sweaters were followed by cardigan sets and wool jumpsuits, perfect for Chanel´s winter. Simple yet chic handbags and thigh-high suede boots complete the ensemble with effortless charm. Layers of iconic Chanel jewellery add a touch of timeless presence to the soft and romantic dresses. The massive hats, some adorned with brooches, are a clear callback to Chanel's legacy, reimagined in fresh pastels that breathe new life into a beachside staple.
