German photographer Axel Hoedt remains what traditional carnival uses to be on his new book, Once a Year, the book launch celebration took place at Donlon Books in East London. Once a Year is a photographic study of the german carnival, or better known as Fasnacht, Fastnacht or Fasnet, a carnival procession which it covers the areas of Switzerland, western Austria and southern Germany. The photographer has focused his work in the last area.
Once a year is based in the carnival tradition that takes place every January and February, where a pageant of people dressed as demons, witches, animals or spirits perform symbolic expulsion of the bad spirits of the winter.
Alex Hoedt capture the essence of traditional carnival into still life, polaroids and studio photos. Also beautiful essays which within the photos make a fascinating book that you must have.
