Andor is a rara avis in the Star Wars universe, even more so when compared to the rest of the series released on Disney+, those we could say are part of the Filoniverse, led by The Mandalorian. The tone is different, even the cinematography stands out. The series starring Diego Luna moved away from The Volume and was filmed on location; its tone was darker, and one could even say it felt more like an HBO production than a Disney one — not to mention the performances. We finally have the first trailer, and Andor surprises us once again.
Once again, Andor distances itself from what Star Wars has recently accustomed us to, starting with the music, which completely veers away from Williams' classic notes, opting instead for a rock/pop song that gives this preview a dynamic, fun, and action-packed feel. If the first season explored the inner workings of the Empire's oppression, this season will showcase the beginning of the revolution.
Let’s face it: the current state of Star Wars is, to put it mildly, not the healthiest, even with a big win like its latest and excellent series Skeleton Crew. Shifting the narrative after the disaster that was The Rise of Skywalker and the mediocre releases on Disney+ — like The Acolyte, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, or the last season of The Mandalorian— is no easy task. Part of this turmoil resulted in Andor's viewership not matching its outstanding quality. The Star Warsuniverse is vast and holds enormous potential, accommodating both charming series aimed at younger audiences, like the aforementioned Skeleton Crew, and content worthy of standing alongside productions like Shōgun, The Last of Us, or House of the Dragon. That is Andor: a series capable of putting the Star Wars name in the running for Best Drama at the Emmys.
On April 22, Andor Season 2 arrives on Disney+. There’s still time to catch up. You won't regret it. May the Force be with you!
