Rotterdam based Kunsthal Museum welcomes ten sculptures by 20th century American sculptor, Alexander Calder, until May 29, 2022. Known for his ‘stabile’ sculptures, Calder played with movement and space to create mobile-like constructions which, unusually for their time, defied a stable base. Instead, Calder often embraced huge, hanging structures. Not only paying tribute to the sculptor by exhibiting these magnificent stabiles, Calder Now pays homage to contemporary artists who draw inspiration from the infamous artist.
A prominent figure in this exhibition is Aki Sasamoto. Born in Japan, 1980, Sasamoto will not just present but perform her exhibition Squirrel Ways which was created in Saché (France). Like the other ten artists featured in this exhibition, Sasamoto draws from her own experience and unique culture to create a sensory stimulating experience.
As well as sculpture, Calder Now explores mediums such as sound, space, time, scent, and performance. A trip to this exhibition will fully immerse the viewer in the wide range of influence that a single artist might have on his contemporaries. But, despite obvious inspiration from Calder, each of these artists presents their own unique character and vision, providing a completely enveloping experience in which the viewer is constantly stimulated.
