Thirty-six hours on a dancefloor sounds less like a weekend plan and more like a test of character. Waterworks, however, is making a persuasive case for staying until the very end. From midday on Saturday, 12 September, until midnight on Monday, 14 September, its Extended edition will take over The Cause in London for one continuous marathon of underground dance music.
The format gives the festival room to do exactly what its name promises: stretch things out. Longer sets, upgraded production and an expanded network of dancefloors should allow the programme to breathe beyond the usual quick-fire festival timetable. That matters with a line-up moving between house, techno, bass, jungle, grime and more slippery corners of club culture. Bradley Zero and Erol Alkan, Christian AB and Craig Richards, Moxie and Dyed Soundorom, and Raresh and Sonja Moonear are among the pairings, while Eris Drew, Midland, Daniel Avery, Djrum, DJ Storm, Objekt, Skee Mask and Tim Reaper appear across the weekend. Live sets come from Reptant, Alex Kassian, Manami and Decius Soundsystem.
Rather than treating The Cause as one enormous room, Waterworks is leaning into the venue’s many personalities. Love International occupies The Gallery from opening until Sunday midday; Resident Advisor marks its twenty-fifth anniversary in the Warehouse; and Sunday brings collective-led takeovers from Keep Hush, Outlook Festival, DaMetalMessiah, EC2A and Rupture. Together, they trace some of the communities and histories that keep London’s club ecosystem moving, from soundsystem culture to grime, dubstep and jungle.
Waterworks was founded to place underground artists at the centre of UK club culture, and this new chapter takes that premise literally: more time for selectors, more space for soundsystems and fewer reasons to watch the clock. The full set times are now available online. Comfortable shoes, strategic naps and an unusually convincing Monday excuse remain your responsibility.
