heartless romance arrives today as the first taste of Thera's upcoming second album, taking the Czech artist further into the darker side of pop. Seductive without losing the emotional pull of her earlier work, the single brings a new confidence to her sound and makes the dancefloor an increasingly important part of a universe that has been gradually shifting in this direction for some time.
Working with producer Jakke Erixson, Thera moves through gliding synths and hip-hop-influenced beats before letting the track open into a much bigger chorus. Behind that energy sits a considerably messier story: being intensely wanted by someone who still refuses to choose you and keeps coming back whenever loneliness takes over. heartless romance captures that frustrating space between desire and commitment but turns it into something you can actually dance to.
We had already started to notice that change earlier this year with the KNWLSY remix of rewind, which pushed one of Thera's most personal tracks into darker, more club-ready territory. At the time, she was also preparing to support Jason Derulo across European arenas, and both things seemed to point towards a bigger and more physical approach to her music. A few months later, heartless romance makes that direction feel much more intentional.
Those months on the road have since become everywhere, all at once, a seven-track live EP capturing the energy of her first arena tour. Her rendition of Charli xcx's Break the Rules, which became a crowd favourite along the way, also feels particularly fitting now that Thera is allowing herself to play more freely with the pop influences surrounding her music.
With more than eleven million streams behind her, the next challenge is deciding what to do with all that momentum. Her second album is currently taking shape, and heartless romance gives us the first real clue.
