Fashion and photography have the power to convey messages without the need for words. To define Rafael Pavarotti solely as a fashion photographer, therefore, would be to overlook an artistic vision that extends beyond aesthetics and clothing. The
Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) in Paris presents
Rafael Pavarotti, Photographer, an exhibition exploring his work, through 2 May 2027. Bringing together more than two hundred photographic prints, the exhibition explores the Brazilian photographer’s creative journey and his contribution to redefining beauty in the fashion industry. Through his images he addresses identity, diversity, representation and cultural heritage. They challenge traditional beauty standards and remind us of the importance of recognising and celebrating differences.
Born in Belém, in northern Brazil, in 1993, Rafael Pavarotti discovered photography at a young age. His artistic vision is deeply influenced by his childhood, his family and his Amazonian surroundings. The colourful objects belonging to his grandmother, the strong women in his family, and the natural environment of his homeland have all contributed to shaping his unique visual identity. Pavarotti’s photographs are instantly recognisable thanks to their vibrant colours, dramatic lighting and theatrical compositions. His portraits often present their subjects as powerful, confident and almost mythical figures. Having photographed international figures such as Rihanna, Beyoncé and Harry Styles, as well as working with major luxury fashion houses, he has established himself as an important figure in contemporary fashion imagery.
However, his work goes beyond aesthetics. Through his photographs, Pavarotti challenges traditional beauty standards and gives greater visibility to Black and Indigenous people who have historically been underrepresented in fashion media. His February 2022 British Vogue cover, featuring nine Black African models, illustrates how fashion photography can become a platform for inclusion. The exhibition also reveals the creative process behind his images, presenting preparatory sketches, magazine spreads and garments alongside photographs. Furthermore, his connection to the Amazon introduces an environmental dimension, encouraging visitors to reflect on the relationship between culture, nature and the future of fashion.
The exhibition, Rafael Pavarotti, Photographer, is an invitation to reconsider our perceptions of beauty, identity and representation. Pavarotti demonstrates that photography can do more than capture the world as it is. It can challenge the way we see it, question what we take for granted and help us imagine a more inclusive society. After all, isn’t that what photography is about? Capturing the world through your own eyes, expressing a personal vision that is as unique as it is intimate.
Every photograph offers a glimpse into the way someone sees and understands the world. Therefore, giving visibility to different perspectives allows us to broaden our own horizons and discover realities we may never have encountered before. Sometimes, we simply need to see the world through someone else’s eyes to realise how much we have yet to understand.
