Hiroshi Fujiwara has spent long enough shaping the codes of contemporary streetwear to know that a logo, a good jacket and a well-placed cultural reference can do plenty of talking. For his latest Moncler x Fragment collection, though, the Japanese godfather of cool is apparently after a little quiet. Or at least the very polished version of it that comes with a white studio backdrop, a gondola and a reversible varsity jacket.
The new chapter of the ongoing partnership, which began in 2018, looks towards Japan and the mountains — two reference points that feel like familiar territory. Fujiwara takes the Japanese souvenir jacket as a starting point, folding its embroidered nostalgia into an American varsity silhouette. The result is a reversible piece that carries an embroidered map tracing a route from Japan to Italy, a suitably literal nod to the relationship between the two brands. This particular design will be exclusive to Moncler stores in Japan and Milan, so consider it a souvenir jacket with an unusually demanding itinerary.
Elsewhere, the collection trades Moncler’s usual alpine bulk for lighter layers: windbreakers, shirt jackets, jerseys, zip-up hoodies, T-shirts and trousers, all produced without down insulation. There is a deep green-and-black dégradé check in brushed cotton flannel, while a graffiti-style Moncler FRGMT logo and embroidered references to Casa Moncler — the label’s new Milan headquarters — supply the expected dose of branding without turning every garment into a billboard.
The campaign keeps the message equally restrained. Fujiwara appears as its central figure, photographed in sharp focus against a clean white background, occasionally joined by a dog inspired by the collection’s puppy motif. It is all very controlled, very minimal, and not entirely allergic to a little whimsy. The gondola, meanwhile, performs the useful task of making the city-to-mountain narrative impossible to miss.
For the first time, the project also includes FRGMTmini: smaller versions of the checked coach jacket, hoodie, sweatpants and puppy-print T-shirt for children who, presumably, have already developed strong opinions on technical outerwear. Footwear comes via a three-way proposition with Clarks Originals: the Trailgrip Wallabee GTX combines the Wallabee upper with Moncler’s Trailgrip Vibram outsole, GORE-TEX lining and Fujiwara’s all-black Fragment treatment. Practical for wet pavements, mountain paths and looking suspiciously prepared at either.
The Moncler x Fragment by Hiroshi Fujiwara collection is available now in selected Moncler stores and via moncler.com.
