Currently underway, the Laws of Nature exhibition at Galerie Gomis, Brussels, brings together the distinctive voices of five artists – Bettina Pittaluga, Djeneba Aduayom, Gleeson Paulino, Mar+Vin, and David Uzochukwu – in a seamless harmony, exploring the aspects of intricate beauty and complexity of nature. More than just an exhibition, Laws of Nature is an enchanting dialogue that transcends boundaries, inviting you to engage with the profound beauty of our world through the lens of these fantastic photographers.
Franco-Uruguayan photographer Bettina Pittaluga, equipped with a background as a photo reporter and a sociology degree, captures moments with a characteristic honesty. Focused on people and their stories, she captures real emotions and the authenticity of the human experience through her lens. Her approach is distinctly physical and instinctive, invoking the human senses and replicating a sense of reality. In her work, you can find themes of love, tenderness, and kindness, inspired by the daily battle beyond the aesthetics against injustice, violence, and hatred, infusing purpose into each captured moment.
Currently based in Southern California, Djeneba Aduayom’s journey from professional dancer to photographer creates an intimate understanding and love for movement and performance in her work, transcending conventional boundaries. Aduayom is very talented in several disciplines that inform her work. Incorporating her knowledge of dance, architecture, and interior design into her photography, she blends all these modes to explore the nature of our reality. Aduayom’s artistic concepts and expressions are grounded in exploring the inner worlds within her imagination, a direct and instinctual outcome of her experiences in the tangible world, painting the beauty of the world as she experiences it for us to witness.
Hailing from Eldorado city, Gleeson Paulino’s artistic odyssey began in a small Mato Grosso Do Sul community before taking him to Vienna at age 17. His creative journey flourished in London, ultimately leading him to embrace the art of photography. Gleeson’s narrative stands as a testament to the transformative power of creativity. Gaining prominence through exhibitions at Lamb London Gallery and Le Salon Des Beaux Art, Gleeson reached a milestone in 2022 with his inaugural solo exhibition in Sao Paulo. The showcase featured the celebrated Baptismo series, resonating with the profound symbolism of water—a symbol of life and rebirth.
Growing up in Luxembourg and Belgium, Uzochukwu embarked on his artistic journey with self-portraiture, later evolving to capture portraits in nature. Uzochukwu’s surreal imagery transforms nature into the framing for his portraiture, subverting expectations. This distinctive style has led to collaborations with artists such as FKA Twigs and Iris van Herpen but has also become a lens through which he captures metamorphosis. Each frame unfolds like a visual narrative, unveiling hidden beauty within the subject's transformation—a testament to Uzochukwu’s ability to transcend the ordinary and reveal the extraordinary through the lens.
Mar+Vin, the dynamic duo of fashion photographers comprised of Marcos Florentino and Kelvin Yule, joined forces in 2016. Together, they form a visual creative partnership that knows no boundaries when it comes to exploring the realms of beauty, fashion, and politics in their work. Their collaborative vision has propelled them into the spotlight, delving into the roots of culture, the essence of blackness, and the reconstruction of the image of Brazilian beauty in the 21st century. They explore beauty as an act of resistance, challenging the pervasive racism that still permeates Brazilian society as well as the discrimination of the LGTBQ+ community.
Together, these five artists, through their own unique lens, make up a comprehensive ode to the Laws of Nature. The exhibition has already garnered international recognition, including appearances at Photo Vogue Festival, Les Nouveaux Romantiques, and 1-54 African Contemporary Art Fair.Visit the exhibition until January 20th, 2024, to be part of this extraordinary artistic journey.
