True to its origins, Lacoste has set its Spring/Summer 2020 runway show at the Court Simonne-Mathieu in Paris’ Roland-Garros tennis complex. With a special focus on chromaticism, which translated into monochrome ensembles as well as colour-blocking looks, Louise Trotter has presented a collection where less is more and that highlights what the ‘crocodile’ house does best: combine preppy with sports.
The simple, straight lines and refined tailored pieces like suits, blazers and trench coats contrasted with the more flowy, eerie silhouettes of parkas, pleated skirts, relaxed pants and oversized polos. But regardless of their shape and form, all the clothing conveyed cohesion because of its rich and strong game colour: sky blue, mint, pale pink, garnet, vibrant yellow, electric blue, English green… From the deepest tones to the lighter hues, all of them looked polished and elegant.
The collection’s strongest point, in addition to the savvy use of colour, relies in its simplicity: the pieces are perfect for a classic wardrobe and for those who want pieces that last longer than just one season or trend. Lacoste’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection is durable and timeless, and not only because of its minimalism but also because of its high-quality. However, there are a few ‘more fashionable’ pieces, like a pair of emerald green pants with the house’s signature crocodile printed all over or a handful of polos, shirts and pants in graphic colour mixes (combining yellow, white, orange, green and blue).
Other highlight pieces are the reinterpretations of the pique polo shirt, the house’s signature – and main income –, which is now presented in different forms: from a contrasted leather-collared polo to a straight, floor-length polo dress in green, to many oversized, waffled-sleeved models. Also, the impeccable treatment of leather – it looked like latex almost – in a few jackets and long trench coats made the runway all the more interesting.
