Kiminté Kimhekim’s world is all about obsession. Those very specific concepts that have such a sufficient impact on his mind that there’s a need to turn the thought into something tangible, and that results in a series of different collections where the focus is each one of them. This season was more about how to fit all the pieces together when creating a collection, the peak obsession of a creative director, not only in the design process but also in the logistics of putting on a show in the most literal way, especially when there’s the need to narrow the distance between two places far away from each other, Seoul and Paris. Photographer Erwan Filidori captured the final moments of putting the pieces together at the backstage of the show before presenting to the world the completed puzzle.
By focusing each season on a particular element, Kimhekim has been able to create a very striking and recognisable aesthetic for his brand. Big bows, hair garments, pearls all over the place, and his beloved denim, the puzzle idea worked not only as a conceptual reference but also as a way of creating, merging together all the pieces for which he is so well known. Deconstructed trenches and blazers are layered over transparencies, which are also staples of the brand and self-referential to some earlier pieces of his first collections. Audience favourites such as the shiny silver monroe flat and the pearl tear sunglasses make a return; some must-haves like the scarf with the omnipresent name tag add fun to the looks; and fresh debuts like the fur sole sneakers expand the Kimhekim universe. Cosy knitwear and elegantly chic black and white coats carry on the love and obsession for the craft.
