Some relationships stay with us long after they end, forcing us to reconsider parts of ourselves we thought we understood. On Bespoke, the first single from his forthcoming eleventh studio album, AMATEUR, Gregory Douglass revisits a queer connection in which intimacy and illusion became increasingly difficult to separate. Led by piano, strings and his soulful vocals, the song looks back on that relationship with tenderness while acknowledging the heartbreak behind it.
For Douglass, the relationship was particularly complicated because the person at its centre became both a muse and a mirror. “It anchors the album and is quite medicinal in ways I think people may really need right now,” he says of his decision to introduce AMATEUR with the track. Throughout Bespoke, desire coexists with disappointment, while shame gives way to compassion and a clearer understanding of what the relationship meant.
The same emotional directness shapes AMATEUR, Douglass’ first original studio album in nearly ten years. Across the record, he turns to queer identity, open relationships and the process of finding oneself again through adulthood and reinvention. Its stripped-back production of piano, strings and voice leaves little distance between the experiences being revisited and the person revisiting them.
It is a personal return for an artist who has spent twenty-five years largely forging his own path outside the traditional music industry. Across ten independently released studio albums, Douglass has shared stages with artists including Regina Spektor and Anaïs Mitchell. Yet AMATEUR is less concerned with what he has achieved than with what comes next.
After decades of making music, Douglass does not present himself as a definitive version of who he is. He describes AMATEUR as the work of someone “still learning, still unlearning, and still becoming.” Bespoke begins that process by looking back at what has been left behind.
