The 1985 exhibition celebrating Karl Lagerfeld’s first twenty years at Fendi is reinterpreted and expanded in the same space at Rome’s Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna. From July 10 to October 25, After Steps Through Work is open to the public, revisiting the original exhibition as closely as possible in a contemporary revival.
Developed by Maria Grazia Chiuri and curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, the exhibition is a tribute to Fendi’s centennial and a deep dive into Lagerfeld’s highly influential tenure at the Italian house, which lasted until his death in 2019. Documenting the process from conception and design to the final realisation of a garment, the exhibition traces the journey of a piece from beginning to end. The showcase is divided into sections based on Lagerfeld’s 1985 exhibition narrative: Tavolette, Caleidoscopio, Matrici Progettuali, Teatro, Pettine, Video, Schizzi and Computer.
Excellent craftsmanship drives the house’s DNA, promising attention to detail and products crafted with meticulousness. On display are fabrics and patterns for visitors to observe and study up close. Original Lagerfeld fashion illustrations are displayed in glass cases and on the walls, offering a glimpse into the mind of the visionary designer. The final part features extensive press coverage of the 1985 exhibition, sparking conversation about the progression of fashion museology in Italy.
Karl Lagerfeld’s partnership with Fendi is the longest collaboration between a designer and a luxury fashion house the industry has ever seen. Hired by the Fendi sisters to lead the ready-to-wear and fur lines, the German designer left an indelible signature on the house, transforming and modernising the label for the modern woman. His presence in the fashion industry is greatly missed but forever remembered.
