Season after season, she has been able to connect the missing dots, and now, the Dior Fall 2024 Collection forms part of this universe. Unveiled at the Brooklyn Museum, it is a love letter to the connection between Paris and New York while referencing female icons like Marlene Dietrich or Marilyn Monroe.
Dior's storied legacy in New York City spans decades of haute couture brilliance and refined fashion. Since its debut in the post-war era, exemplified by the iconic New Look, Dior has enraptured New York's fashion elite. Collaborations with local artists and institutions further deepen Dior's ties to New York's dynamic cultural scene, weaving its heritage into the city's vibrant fabric. Today, with its distinctive berets, newspaper print bags, and beatnik peacoats, Dior sets the tone with a star-studded show gathered at the Brooklyn Museum: a celebration of the enduring bond between Paris and New York, ignited by Monsieur Dior's landmark visit in 1947.
This collection is a rich tapestry woven from Americana influences and Parisian elegance, with the singular style of Marlene Dietrich, a longtime Dior client, as the unifying thread. Chiuri draws inspiration from Dietrich's trademark subversion of gender norms, slicing and dicing traditionally masculine tailoring and juxtaposing it with flowing silhouettes, luxurious raffia textures, and beaded fringe.
But Dietrich isn't the only muse. The collection also pays homage to the hyper-feminine allure of Marilyn Monroe, who famously donned a backless Dior gown for her last photoshoot. This influence is clear in the sensual, shoulder-baring looks and tight silhouettes that walked the runway. In addition, the most prominent nod to New York is seen in the stars-and-stripes sweatshirt and an oversized print of the Statue of Liberty. However, subtle references to the city's unique personal style were also evident through Aviator jackets, trench coats, and practical tweed.
The show also served as a tribute to the late American artists Faith Ringgold and Dorothy Iannone, whose elaborately embellished Dior Lady Art bags were showcased on the Brooklyn Museum runway. These bags are a perfect embodiment of the collection's core theme: the beautiful alchemy that occurs when Parisian sophistication meets Downtown cool.
