Jonathan Anderson's debut cruise collection for Dior landed in Los Angeles as a full-blown love letter to cinema, staged at the newly opened David Geffen Galleries at LACMA, surrounded by a front row that read like a Hollywood call sheet: Miley Cyrus, Anya Taylor-Joy, Taylor Russell, Sabrina Carpenter, Al Pacino and more, sealing the evening's old-guard glamour.
The choice of venue was pointed: LA is where Dior's mythology and Hollywood's dream machine have always orbited each other. Monsieur Dior dressed Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, and Marilyn Monroe; he designed costumes for Hitchcock's Stage Fright and received an Oscar nomination in 1955 for Terminal Station. With so many references playing between garments, fantasy, and Dior's expertise, Anderson used all of them as raw material for the Cruise collection. As John Lee Hooker's Murder crept through the air, the collection unfolded like a film noir reel.
Anderson opened with references to the Californian poppy before pivoting into something darker and more architectural: a Dior grey wool flannel coat, its surface striped with the geometric shadows cast by Venetian blinds — a single look that did more for the genre than most mood boards manage. Drop-waist dresses moved with the fluid ease of a slow-motion tracking shot, while Philip Treacy-designed headpieces added the kind of sculptural drama that belongs under a spotlight. Pastels and florals surfaced early, soft and almost innocently pretty against what came next.
Then the Bar jacket reappeared, stretched to an almost floor-grazing length that blurred into something else entirely — part tailoring, part cape, part dress. Distressed denim textures collided with flannel, a pairing that felt both rugged and cinematic, like a costume that had lived a life before hitting the runway. Newsprint bags in the tradition of Galliano's obsessive maximalism appeared alongside silhouettes that toggled between tightly corseted and deliberately relaxed.
The accessories were as well executed as the rest of the collection: Saddle bags returned with car-paint finishes and motor-key charms swinging from the straps, the same vintage American automobile energy that ran through the fabrics and prints, now miniaturised and worn on the arm. Newsprint clutches and the new Cigale bag, alongside novelty clutches shaped like snails and ladybugs, brought the whimsy that we have seen in recent seasons, as did pins previously teased ahead of the show. So many references, so much to digest, but so far one thing is clear: we are living for this era.
