Russian iconography and aesthetics are distinctly reflected in Gosha Rubchinskiy’s designs. While receiving well deserved appraise and attention, his collections are seen as a fresh take on street-wear, which in the mainstream is more usually found to be influenced by American culture. By capturing moments and faces of Russia’s contemporary youth culture, the photographer and designer continues to explore a familiar theme. In Youth Hotel, which is releasing today, he translates his visions onto a 118-page softcover book.
The most striking thing about the images found in Rubchinskiy’s new book, is the undisputed sincerity of the adolescents. The photographs were taken over a period of one year, and besides the focal subject of the book, Russia’s upcoming generation in their habitual environment, it is Soviet architecture, landmarks and buildings from Rubchinskiy’s native land that adorn the pages.
Youth Hotel makes the third title by Rubchinskiy to be published by IDEA Books, and will be available in the very limited volume of 500 copies. Seeing how his last photo book sold out in two days, those wanting to acquire a copy should be on standby already, as the book releases at Dover Street Market around the world today. Fans located in London are in luck, as Rubchinskiy will concur the release there with a signing from 5pm.
