What if catchy Afrobeats rhythms met soulful Christian lyricism? Singer, songwriter and actress Miriam Nyarko combines the two in her new infectious, R&B-driven single Built On You. Nyarko's career in the music industry is a relatively recent one – her debut single Step by Step first came out in 2020, when she was only 17. With Built On You, British, Ghanaian and Bajan artist offers us closer insight into her relationship with faith: “This song is my personal testimony shared to inspire anyone listening,” she reveals, “This is my love story, my faith story, declaring that God is my firm foundation.”
Her new single is a gem of Afro-gospel, a musical genre that has been gaining prominence in the past few years. Led by artists such as Limoblaze and Uwa, Afro-gospel conveys faith-fueled messages through bouncy beats and uplifting percussion drums, aimed at a young African Christian audience. Speaking about the creative process behind Built On You, Nyarko says: “The song is inspired by my Bible verse for 2023, Matthew 7:25, which says, ‘The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundations on the rock’.” Not by chance, Miriam grew up in a gospel household herself – at the age of 4, she started singing in her local church and never abandoned her love for music.

Yet, since an early age, Nyarko has also cultivated a passion for acting. She is a force to be reckoned with – you might already be familiar with her numerous roles in West End theatre productions and BBC shows. She starred as Young Nala in The Lion King musical, and as Miri in the CCBC series Almost Never. With her new single Built On You, multi-talented Nyarko allows us to witness a more intimate side of her story, letting her silky, warm voice guide us through her journey with faith.
