Seasonal switch is standard in all retail environments, but nowhere it is as dramatic as at Dover Street Market New York, the distinctive fashion and lifestyle store created by Rei Kawakubo, the founder and designer of Comme des Garçons.

This NYFW, the ground floor of the store showcased the debut collection of Demna Gvasalia for Balenciaga. Named a work in progress, it represents fashion’s own working process. The stepladder displays accessories, surrounded by installations of paint-cans, tool-boxes and bare plaster walls, making it feel as if the space is still under construction, and accenting the radical utilitarian undercurrent of Demna Gvasalia’s Balenciaga designs.

The permeant retail space located on the third floor takes inspiration from the Maison Balenciaga. The fabric cabine curtains are reinterpreted in polished, corrugated aluminum resulting in a precious yet industrial feel. It is also a witty nod to the Iron Curtain, which serves as a nod to Gvasalia’s own cultural roots.

DSMNY also celebrated the launch of an exclusive collection from Elie Top with an installation by artist Matias Kiss, and the debut of Charles Jeffrey Loverboy’s 4th floor installation.
