Celebrating contradiction “as a reflection of the ongoing process of becoming and self-definition”, Mexico-based nomadic gallery and artists/curators collective Masa presents the exhibition Recover/Uncover, on view until April 8. These contradictions – like reveal/conceal, infinite/finite, energy/mass, function/decoration and external/internal – are a way to examine, according to them, “the convention of taxonomy as an organizational exercise that reveals its own ambiguities.”
Blurring the lines between art and design, between a gallery space and a nomadic project, the team at Masa knows what these natural contradictions and dichotomies are about. For this exhibition, they’ve selected a group of artists-designers like Tania Pérez Córdova, Misha Kahn, José Dávila, Adeline de Monseignat, Brian Thoreen or Hollie Bowden to exhibit pieces that find a balance between function and beauty, absence and presence, or that examine the relationship between tension to mass or between objects and materials. As Su Wu, the curator, says “Within a set of binaries, Masa is the /. The pieces in Recover/Uncover exist along a spectrum of indeterminates rather than at a stasis, defying strict archetypes in favour of an ongoing exploration of purpose and expression.”
