Centred around an examination of ontological thought, this collection looks away from conventional theories of reality. Instead, Exquisite Gucci, their latest Fall/Winter 2022 collection, channels a world of transfiguration. Accrediting the collection as an approach to the phantasmagorical power of fashion, Creative Director Alessandro Michele presents the Gucci x Adidas collection.
Housed in a playhouse of mirrors, models parade the warping runway. The playful manipulation of refractions creates the concave and convex distortion of their looks, where light repels from the slick gleam of their trouser legs and rays bounce off silver studded jackets. This transformation is a motif which runs throughout the show, communicated through a masterful display of contortion and illusion.
At the peak of juxtaposition is the convergence of streetwear giant Adidas with fashion house Gucci. Executed with a meticulous nuance, the brands come together to present an unexpected, but undoubtedly, iconic collaboration. With the confluence of the brands still pertaining to their accredited house styles, the collection sees the signature three stripes run the legs of vivacious green trousers, brand blue leather boots and purple slanted berets. Under trefoil stamped tweed lay classic blue-cotton shirts accompanied by the sophisticated ease of a simple slim tie. With a slight reimagination, Exquisite Gucci also presents the classic Gazelle silhouette, exhibited in experimental colourways of magenta, mustard and a cool stone grey.
The creation of this altered world is something which Alessandro Michele references to “Multiplications, substitutions, overturnings, magnifications… constrictions of the forms,” (J. Baltrušaitis) in his pre-show statement. This transformative ability is something which Michele relays to the fashion world, how clothes are “the makers of manifold,” communicated through the purposeful silhouettes of the collection’s pieces. Models adorn the masculine cuts and finishes of velvet, corduroy, and leather suits, some front towering headwear and others the trailing veils and the drifting hemline of a whimsical prairie dress. The layered ingenuity of the collection celebrates fashion as a truly metamorphic medium.
