Bennytheghost, who originally found comfort in the indie pop sound, is taking a darker, edgier direction with a sound better categorised in dark pop, indie rock. A new course with which the artist, who has made some incredible strides as a writer, musician, and performer, seems to feel more comfortable than ever, and whose letter of introduction is the new single he is releasing now, Animal. In collaboration with renowned indie artist KING MALA, the track marks a creative shift and new era for bennytheghost, where he leans into an A24 horror movie vibe complete with humour, some self-deprecation, and healthy absurdism.
“I take massive inspiration from Joji, whose songs are also incredibly dramatic and heartbreaking, while his character is so goofy, aloof, mysterious, and funny. A dichotomy that houses those two opposites is so compelling to me; that's where I want to live,” says the up-and-coming artist about his new single, Animal, which opens a new stage in his musical career after having received acclaim from the likes of Elton John and Zane Lowe as well as being added to prominent Spotify playlists. To welcome this new era, he wanted to join forces with King Mala, known for hits like she calls me daddy, and cult leader, among many others.
By using self-deprecating sarcasm, bennytheghost delves into topics ranging from relationships gone toxic, loneliness, hedonism, and hyper-romanticising bad situations to the evil-animalistic-selfish woes of capitalism, social anxiety, and greedy human desires. With the support and distribution of Good Boy Records, this new single promises to continue to reveal the artist's creative universe, which now opens a new and exciting stage.
