It seems to be THE moment for Jacob Elordi right now. What began as the cute bad-boy teenage crush in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth, or the unpredictable boyfriend in Euphoria, is finally evolving into something more—something mature, more complex. So, much like an Australian-born Cairns Birdwing Butterfly, Elordi is emerging from his Hollywood cocoon, slowly spreading his wings. And we’re not (at least not only) talking about his performance in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. We’re talking about passion. Revenge. Wilderness in the heart. Romance. And a lot of drama. We’re talking about Wuthering Heights, whose official trailer has just been released.
And as the trailer reveals: the movie, directed by Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman, Saltburn), is going to be sensual, mesmerising, visually stunning. And definitely something completely different from any version we’ve seen before. The story itself is based on the British novel written by Emily Brontë and published in 1847, and revolves around the romance between the reckless foundling Heathcliff, played by Elordi, and his adoptive sister Catherine, portrayed by Margot Robbie. Their connection seems to spark howling storms—that’s how raw, pure, strong-minded and uncompromising their bond is. Yet it’s a love driven by societal expectations and envy, one that stretches across generations.
While many fans of the classic novel have been criticising this adaptation for months now, one thing is certain: the final product is going to be captivatingly interesting. Because Fennell is set to do exactly what she did with her previous hit Saltburn: she’s going to do what the f*** she wants. Because above all, the goal was never to simply retell an already-told story; this is going to be a contemporary, provocative take. Otherwise, it wouldn’t make sense that none other than our favourite brat Charli xcx is contributing original songs to this film. In the end, after watching the trailer, Elordi somehow still seems to be drawn to characters that are a bit toxic, but we can’t wait to see it.
